There are electrodes on the nozzle which ignite the mist. On the side of the oil burner is a motor which pumps oil into the nozzle. The motor also operates the fan that blows onto the fire, forcing the hot air through the heat exchanger and on to the exhaust system. Ensure that the oil burner is kept clean. If the fan housing is clogged at the opening, there are brushes that will overheat. At the top of the oil burner is the ignition transformer. If your burner is not igniting, the electrodes on the ignition transformer may have burned out. If the ignition transformer is loose or very hot, replacement is needed. Barometric Damper of the oil furnace
The barometric damper is easily identified and is a simple flap that can be opened or closed in the exhaust stack. When the furnace is on, it opens to draw extra air, aiding in the exhaust process. When the furnace is turned off, the damper closes to prevent entry of cold air from outside. This simple device is critical to the heating and safety of your home or business. It prevents carbon monoxide from entering your room. If the barometric damper is ever stuck, just move it back and forth a few times. It will always correct the problem.
The oil furnace, like all furnaces, has a place where the heat exchanger can be inspected. It is unique hardware from other types of furnaces, in that it has an inspection port. This is because the heat exchanger becomes extremely hot on your oil furnace. The inspection port is a metal cover that slides open for your inspecting the heat exchanger. WARNING: If you slide the inspection port open, have your oil furnace turned OFF. Fire can shoot from the inspection port while your oil furnace is operating.

There is sensitive “hi-tech” hardware, such as the thermostat, that requires a qualified technician to repair.
