So, winter is upon us, and as it gets colder and colder your heater has to work harder and harder (which is why you never see a heater go out in summer!) As it does, there’s a greater and greater chance that something is going to go wrong with it.
If you hear something weird: Most of the time you don’t even notice when the furnace turns on. You simply become so accustomed to it that it’s white noise. That’s why it’s so obvious when something is wrong, even if you can’t quite put your finger on how it’s different. Sure, a loud banging or clanging will get you to call us, but you’ll probably want to give us a call if it just doesn’t sound right and you simply think something is off.
If you smell something weird: Sure, the first time you turn on your heater you’ll smell something, usually a musty smell. That’s just the dust and dirt in the ducts that’s being hit by warm air. It will probably go away after a few minutes. But if the smell lingers, check your furnace filter. If it’s new and you continue to smell something strange, but sure to call us. Your furnace might be excessively dirty, there could be a burned electrical component, or maybe there’s something in your ducts that shouldn’t be there. All of these could mean you’re in need of Heating Repair.
If you turn up the heat and nothing happens: Let’s say you keep the thermostat at 68 degrees, and then you come in from shoveling and decide to indulge in a little extra heat. 72 doesn’t feel any warmer than 68. You try 76. Nothing more. You figure something is wrong so you crank it up to 85 and realize that it’s time to give us a call!
