Heating Systems

Today, we are going to discuss the top three choices of heating sources for homes.

Furnace

The first type of heating source is one that the majority of homes in the United States currently have. This is a furnace. A furnace works by blowing heat through ducts that deliver heated air through registers in rooms. A furnace can use natural gas, propane, heating oil, or electricity to run and the life expectancy is 15 to 30 years. Depending on the age of the furnace, they can be extremely efficient with a high SEER rating. One problem with furnaces is that the fans can be loud.

Boilers

Boiler systems use hot water and distribute the heat in hot water, which then gives off heat. The heat is delivered through radiators. Boilers use natural gas, propane, heating oil, biodiesel, or electricity to run. A boiler system has the same life expectancy as a furnace lasting between 15 to 30 years. A boiler can be efficient if it is taken care of properly and inspected before use in the winter months. A con to a boiler system is that they can be expensive to install and maintain over the years.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps use air from surrounding areas to warm the air in your home. A pro to heat pumps are that they can be used to cool your home too! Heat pumps have the shortest life expectancy only lasting around 15 years and they use electricity or geothermal energy to run. A heat pump can be expensive to install and is only really recommended for homes located in a moderate climate (probably not best for Michigan’s bipolar weather).

Furnaces, boilers, and heat pumps are the most popular choices when it comes to heating systems. There are other options like solar and electric heating.
